Hiring a Private Chef for a Hamptons Summer
Hamptons households should start the search for a summer private chef in February or March, because the strongest candidates are booked before Memorial Day. Families who find a private chef in New York for the season early get the best candidates, and they follow a simple timeline.
Private Chefs Inc. (PCI), a New York private chef placement agency founded in 1995, has placed chefs in Hamptons estates and Manhattan residences for over three decades, and the timeline below reflects how its seasonal searches run.

The Hamptons hiring timeline
What does a Hamptons season look like for a chef?
Family meals every day, usually with house guests.
Weekend lunches and dinners for twelve to forty, often outdoors.
Grilling, raw bars and local seafood: Montauk fluke and striped bass in summer, Peconic Bay scallops when the season opens in November for late-season residents.
Farm stand sourcing in Sagaponack, Bridgehampton and East Hampton, with corn and tomatoes peaking in July and August.
Wines from North Fork vineyards for casual entertaining.
Seasonal chef or your year-round Manhattan chef?
Many families prefer the year-round approach, which specialist agencies support with travel-ready chefs who manage sourcing in each home and keep menus consistent.
What housing does a summer chef need?
A guest cottage or staff room within reach of the house. Commuting from the city on Route 27 on summer weekends does not work for a chef who serves breakfast at 8 am. Settle housing before the offer, because it often decides which candidates say yes.
What does a Hamptons summer chef earn?
Seasonal pay is usually a weekly or monthly rate with a completion bonus for staying through Labor Day. Year-round New York chefs earn roughly $140,000 to $250,000, and seasonal rates are set so the chef earns a comparable amount for the summer. New York overtime and rest rules apply to seasonal domestic employees as well.
